The main reason behind this is that June 21 is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, which is also known as the summer solstice. According to Indian tradition, after the summer solstice, the Sun is in Dakshinayana. There are many benefits of doing yoga on this day. Because of which International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21st June only.

How Yoga Day started?

Yoga Day (International Yoga Day 2023) is celebrated on June 21 because it is also the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. The summer solstice holds significance in many cultures. For the first time in 2014, Yoga Day was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations at the time, Ashok Mukherjee, submitted a proposal to the international body to recognize a day for the practice of yoga.

On 27 September 2014, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi announced the celebration of Yoga Day across the world in the United General Assembly. The Prime Minister’s proposal was accepted by the United Nations General Assembly. With the passing of the resolution, the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated on 21 June 2015.
